There are a handful that I had trouble separating from each other. This is truly a book I love, but if I had to pick one thing to criticize…I occasionally became confused about secondary characters. She doesn’t lay it all out for us at the get go, but lets readers discover along with the main character. Carriger has well-thought through the rules and aspects of the world she created, yet they are simple enough not to confuse readers. Everything is precise and meticulously designed, but you as a reader won’t notice until she drops the curtain later on.

The entire cast of Soulless is full of well-rounded characters that readers can both love and hate, depending on the chapter. She is prickly, nosey, and hot-headed but for all that you will cheer for her. While she has a lot of gumption, her posh life up to this point puts some barricades in her way. Alexia Tarabotti, a lady of an alternate 1800’s British society, is attending a party when things go awry. But just know, the whole contrivance is fabulous. Discovering what makes this world tick is just as fun as reading about the hijinks the main character, Alexia, gets into.įor this review, I will focus on the first book in the Parasol Protectorate series. To finish off this tasty treatise is a twist on supernatural creatures and just how they got to be supernatural. Gail Carriger makes literary magic with a sprinkle of science, a dash of of whimsy, and a truckload of steampunk paraphernalia. Just what we need, another vampire-werewolf book. Soulless takes a unique run at the overdone genre of werewolves and vampires.
